Who are we?

We're a bunch of students passionate about the intersection of medicine and public policy.  We dream of a world where health is protected as a fundamental human right -- for everyone!  Maybe we're naive, but we prefer "idealistic."  Potato, potahtoe.

Anyone and everyone with an interest in health and/or policy is welcome to submit to this blog -- it's open-source, baby!  If you have any interest, please shoot us an e-mail at sanjaykishore31@gmail.com.

Sanjay Kishore
Sanjay is a rising senior at Duke hoping to be a physician-advocate someday, somehow.  He's pursuing a Program II major entitled "The Social Determinants of Health" that combines an understanding in public policy and economics through a lens of health and social justice.  He still has no idea what he wants to do with his life, and is an avid Duke basketball fan who still reminisces about the 2010 national championship in his sleep.

Sagar Mehta
Sagar is a rising senior at Duke studying public policy and simultaneously aspiring to become a physician.  He spent a summer in Haiti working alongside a public health NGO to understand challenges of medical care in a resource-poor setting, and also spent a semester studying health and international development in India and China.  A brilliant policy analyst, Sagar possesses an awesomely-fluffy swatch of hair that everyone loves to pet, and is the nicest and most humble person you'll ever meet.

Dhrusti Patel
Dhrusti is a rising senior at Duke interested in medicine....and you get the spiel by now.  A University Scholar, Dhrusti has combined a passion for environmental science with her interest in health in an especially unique way.  She spent a summer examining the effect of unregulated corporate oil pollution in South Africa on health outcomes of marginalized communities, and later studied abroad in India and China to better understand health and development.  Though she may initially appear small in stature, watch out -- Dhrusti is full of fiery passion, and possesses the heart of a lion.  Well, an admittedly petite lion, that is.

Pulkit Taunk
Pulkit Taunk is also a rising senior at Duke destined to become the most compassionate doctor ever known to man (no exaggeration).  A student of psychology, Pulkit has combined his interest in the sciences with an undying focus on patient-centered medicine.  His relentless focus on real people -- not just abstract policies -- has kept all of us grounded.  He also spent a semester alongside Dhrusti and Sagar in India and China -- leveraging his knowledge of Hindi to make real connections with communities in Udaipur.  He will be continuing his community health work in Udaipur this summer -- where his affable personality will undoubtedly make him the most popular man in-town.

Braveen Ragunanthan
Braveen Ragunanthan is a recent graduate of Duke, and is in many ways the role model of all of us interested in health and social justice at Duke.  A full-scholar and public policy major, his accomplishments are too vast to list, but suffice it to say that since he stepped foot on-campus, his infectious passion for global health helped define a culture of social medicine on our campus.  From his experiences with fieldwork in Ethiopia to his internship at the State Department working on global health policy, Braveen has seen and done it all.  His perspective is unique, and tempered with his characteristic modesty -- but don't let it fool you, Braveen will make a serious impact as a physician-advocate sooner rather than later.
